A 2 Course Professional Specialization Students completing this sequence will receive an ACAP Trauma and Resilience Studies Certificate outlining the credit hours toward Trauma Studies they have completed. These courses can be applied toward the full TRS Diploma Program.
Welcome to the first step toward a new understanding of overwhelming experiences that may impact us all!
This preliminary sequence of courses introduces the student to the general concepts of trauma, stress, and overwhelming experiences in everyday life and how they have evolved over the past century. Traumatic Stress studies began with the introduction of psychoanalysis and the unconscious. The field has grown to encompass many disciplines which will be identified in this course sequence, along with an historical perspective on our understanding of what constitutes a traumatic situation, who is vulnerable, what are the many forms of stress response, and how are they identified. Special emphasis is given to the study of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and its variants, including the form of secondary trauma those working with vulnerable populations are likely to suffer themselves. Methods for therapeutic intervention, exploration of the concept of resilience and recent work in that area will be discussed and demonstrated throughout the classes, particularly in the Theories course.
Courses are experiential in that there is a group format with participants encouraged to bring in their own clinical, occupational or personal experience pertinent to the class material. We consider the classroom a laboratory in which we can explore and share perceptions or experiences that will broaden and integrate the intellectual component of the coursework.
Classes meet from 7:10 – 9:15 Thursday evenings for 15 sessions. There are weekly assigned readings and brief written logs about your responses to the readings, questions about class interaction, and reactions to the classes. Other assignments will be discussed and agreed upon within the classes.
1. Evolution of Basic Psychoanalytic, Trauma, and Resilience Concepts
2. Trauma and the Resilient Mind: Contemporary Theories (required)
Electives
